Mathematics
Through our Maths Curriculum at St Michael’s we aim to give our pupils the life-skills to enable them to apply their mathematical knowledge in their day to day life. Our goal is that all children receive a high quality mathematics education regardless of their abilities, gifts and talents. We aim to develop fluency in the fundamentals of maths through varied and frequent practice within increasingly complex problems over time. Children will be able to communicate their mathematical knowledge in a variety of ways. The Maths curriculum provided will be enriching, enjoyable and exciting to engage all learners. Children will develop maths skills to learn independently. Children will be given opportunities to use explore maths across a range of contexts, having the chance to experience a wide range of challenges. Children will leave St Michael’s knowing the importance of maths and what an essential part it will play throughout their lives, becoming confident, fluent mathematicians.

At St Michael’s we have daily maths and mental maths sessions. Our key focus to promote the development of mathematical learning is to regularly teach the basic skills of mathematics via a thorough understanding and use of the four operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The children work through various stages in their understanding of how to use the different operations, below you will find our school calculation policy.
Maths teaching and learning is further enhanced with the use of Maths Whizz – an online tutor based programme funded by school – with years 4, 5, 6 and specifically targeted children. Each child in years 4, 5 and 6 has their own login to enable them to access their Maths Whizz account. This is an invaluable additional resource which further focusses maths lessons on individual mathematical needs.

A key element of mathematical learning is the understanding of multiplication/times table facts. As a school we consistently push the learning of times tables, holding weekly tests and being a regular part of the mental maths sessions.
Maths homework is an essential element of continued learning in maths and this will be sent home regularly by each year group. Times table practice at home should be a part of the homework tasks.
